The Vital Aging Network (VAN) has been active for approximately 20 years, founded in 2004. Initially established to address the evolving needs of aging individuals, VAN quickly gained recognition for its innovative programs and commitment to promoting positive aging. As VAN expanded its reach and impact, it became evident that formalizing its structure would enhance its ability to serve the community effectively.
Thus, in 2010, VAN took a significant step forward by becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This change allowed VAN to access additional resources, broaden its programming, and strengthen its capacity to support older adults in leading fulfilling lives. Current programs reflect VAN's dedication to promoting self-determination, civic engagement, and personal growth among aging individuals, empowering them to live their best lives as they age.
Programs include:
Wellness 50+: Community-based initiatives led by and for adults aged 50 and above. Community members create an environment that fosters engagement and camaraderie while navigating their own wellness as they age.
Aging with Gusto: Community conversations that explore barriers and components to a fulfilling aging experience and give participants tools that promote their well-being and satisfaction.
Ageism Workshops: For organizations and individuals that build awareness of the features and negative impacts of ageism and provide strategies to interrupt ageism and create change.
Evolve (currently on hold): Leadership learning cohorts that build skills and connections for older adults to develop and engage in community projects of their interest.
Community Forums: Informational sessions on topics related to aging.
